Oklahoma City, OK – OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Gov. Mary Fallin plans to issue a 30-day reprieve for an Oklahoma death-row inmate scheduled to die next week for the 1986 shooting death of the mother of his two children.
Fallin's office told The Associated Press on Thursday the governor will issue the reprieve for 55-year-old Garry Thomas Allen. The delay gives Fallin and her legal team more time to consider the Pardon and Parole Board's 2005 recommendation that Allen's death sentence be commuted to life in prison without parole.
The board voted 4-1 in April 2005 to commute Allen's death sentence. He was set for execution, but a judge issued a stay before then-Gov. Brad Henry had a chance to act on the board's recommendation. Allen's attorneys argue he is insane, but a 12-member jury rejected that argument.
