Oklahoma City, OK – Okla. Ethics Commission OKs education PAC transfer

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) The Oklahoma Ethics Commission says a political-action committee supporting a ballot measure to increase education funding can keep nearly $1.7 million in contributions from a national teacher's group.

The Oklahoman newspaper reported Saturday that the commission voted unanimously not to apply a ban on transfers from one PAC to another to the donation by the National Education Association. The money was donated by the NEA's Ballot Initiative and Crisis fund to an Oklahoma group called Yes on 744, which backs State Question 744 on the November ballot.

The commission decided the NEA's ballot fund is not a PAC, so the transaction is not affected by a state law prohibiting in-state or out-of-state PACs from transferring funds to other PACs in the state.

State Question 744 would amend the state's constitution to require Oklahoma to meet surrounding states' average per-student spending within three years.
