Tulsa, OK – Garrett: Okla. schools still will have shortfall
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) State Superintendent Sandy Garrett says that despite legislative attempts to shield education from budget cuts, Oklahoma's education budget still will be about $50 million short.
About $172 million in emergency funding has been designated for education, but Garrett says that won't cover the entire shortfall.
James White, the assistant state superintendent for financial services, says the state Department of Education's two largest allocations won't receive any cuts under a budget agreement being considered by the Legislature.
But he says a third pot of money called "school programs" will take a 7.5 percent cut. He says that will affect teacher insurance contributions, alternative education and advanced placement programs.
