Dav Pilkey (of "Captain Underpants" Fame) on Writing and Illustrating for Children (and for Laughs)

On today's show, we speak by phone with Dav Pilkey, the popular children's book author and illustrator who's probably best known for his "Captain Underpants" series of books. (There are ten books in this series --- Pilkey's now working on the 11th --- as well as a few different spin-off series.) Pilkey tells us about how his career got started, when the "Captain Underpants" character was actually born, and where some of his recurring ideas and themes as a writer and illustrator come from. He also speaks about a special event here in Tulsa that he'll participate in tomorrow night (Friday the 27th). It's called Drawn Together; it's a fundraiser to rebuild the school libraries in Moore, Oklahoma, which were destroyed by the May 20th tornado. The other three outstanding children's/YA authors appearing at this event --- at which each will discuss his work as well as his inspirations as a writer/artist --- will be Jeff Kinney ("Diary of a Wimpy Kid"), Stephan Pastis ("Timmy Failure" and "Pearls Before Swine"), and Lincoln Peirce ("Big Nate"). You'll learn more about tomorrow night's Drawn Together evening here. Also on today's program, our commentator Collin Hinds points out how certain libertarian organizations are lately all but waging war on America's working poor and welfare initiatives.
