Creek County Fire Started by Trash

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Creek County investigators say two people burning trash likely sparked a massive wildfire last week near Bristow that destroyed dozens of homes and torched more than 90 square miles. Creek County Sheriff's Lt. Charles Redfern said Tuesday his office confirmed two people were burning trash in a rural area northwest of Bristow on Thursday. He says a joint investigation with the Bureau of Indian Affairs is ongoing, because there is some dispute about whether the blaze started on tribal land. Redfern says the two could face criminal charges for violating a burn ban. The governor issued a statewide burn ban on Friday, but a countywide burn ban had been in place since July 5. Meanwhile, investigators believe arsonists are to blame for separate wildfires near Luther and Norman. Copyright 2012 The Associated Press.
