Copan Drowning

Copan, OK – Man drowns after jumping into NE Oklahoma lake

COPAN, Okla. (AP) Authorities say a South Coffeyville man has drowned in Copan Lake.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reports that 51-year-old Richard Brown drowned after he jumped into the water for an unknown reason Friday afternoon near Copan Dam.

Troopers say Brown resurfaced but was coughing and then rolled over face down. Troopers say passengers on the 21-foot pontoon boat on which Brown was riding tried to get him out of the water but couldn't, so they swam him to shore. Relatives tried unsuccessfully to revive him.

Troopers say alcohol was a contributing factor in the drowning.
