Oklahoma City, Oklahoma – Frigid weather closes schools in Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Numerous school in Oklahoma are closed because of bitterly cold temperatures.

School officials concerned about the danger to students who walk to school and those waiting at bus stops called off Thursday classes. Highs were expected from about 10 degrees into the 20s.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill advisory statewide through Friday.

Strong winds also blew down power lines in the Oklahoma Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

Oklahoma Gas and Electric reported about 30,000 customers without power at one point but the number was down to just more than 2,000 by late Thursday morning.

Oklahoma Association of Electric Cooperatives spokesman Sid Sperry says rural power systems had just over 5,600 outages at one point but all were back on line by about 1 a.m.

AEP-PSO reported about 4,300 outages in southwestern and northeastern Oklahoma were back on line late Thursday morning.
