Tulsa, OK – Study shows increase in Okla. child poverty

TULSA, Okla. (AP) A new national survey shows that the number of Oklahoma children living in poverty increased 16 percent since 2000.

Oklahoma is ranked 43rd nationally in key indicators of child health and well-being in the 22nd annual Kids Count report. It was released Wednesday by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, which focuses on improving life for disadvantaged children.

Underscoring the toll of the economic downturn, the study found that 35,000 or about 3 percent of Oklahoma children were impacted by foreclosure since 2007.

And last year, about 81,000, or 10 percent, of Oklahoma children lived in homes where at least one parent was unemployed and looking for work.

The survey also found that the number of children living in single-parent households increased by 17 percent in Oklahoma since 2000.
