Chandler, OK – Okla. police chief receives deferred sentence

CHANDLER, Okla. (AP) Chandler's former police chief has received a six-month deferred sentence for failing to report a car accident that injured his wife.

Kevin Towler pleaded no contest Wednesday to the misdemeanor in Lincoln County District Court. He resigned from his position on Tuesday.

District Attorney Richard Smothermon says Towler quit in exchange for receiving the deferred sentence.

Towler has said his wife, Rowena, was driving April 18 when the vehicle skidded off the road and struck a tree near Sparks. Kevin Towler said she was driving because he had consumed beer at a Shawnee bowling alley.

But Smothermon said evidence pointed to Kevin Towler being the driver.

His attorney, Irven Box, said Towler entered the plea and resigned because he wanted the incident behind him.
