Rose, OK – Cherokee Nation developing its first national park
ROSE, Okla. (AP) A preservation group plans to use $4,000 in grants to help the Cherokee Nation develop its first national park.
The grants received by the Saline Preservation Association will be used to help prepare historic structure reports on the 126-year-old Saline District Courthouse in Rose and the spring house, as well as to develop a memorial trail.
Lisa Melchior is the president of the association. Melchior tells the Tulsa World that about one-third of the project is complete. The rotten wood and windows have been replaced at the courthouse, and work on the chimneys and porch should be completed this month.
The district courthouse takes its name from its proximity to salt wells. Reports indicate that the courthouse is the only building still standing among nine judicial district venues used by the American Indian tribe in the 19th century.
