Norman, OK – Carter praises Clinton for trip to North Korea

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) Former President Jimmy Carter has praised the work of another ex-president, Bill Clinton, in securing the freedom of two U.S. journalists held by North Korea.

Carter said Friday that during the early stages of planning for the trip, he was approached as a possible emissary to the North Koreans, but it eventually was decided that Clinton would fill that role.

Carter spoke to reporters before delivering a speech at the New Baptist Covenant Midwest Regional meeting.

Clinton traveled to Pyongyang on a private humanitarian mission and met Tuesday with North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, who pardoned the women who had been sentenced to hard labor after being arrested in March for entering the country illegally.

The journalists, Euna Lee and Laura Ling, then returned to the U.S. with Clinton.
