ASHER, Okla. (AP) — The Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality has lifted a boil advisory it issued for the Pottawatomie County town of Asher.
The agency said Friday that the water there is now safe for human consumption. DEQ says it issued the advisory to boil water intended for human consumption after initial and follow-up water samples indicated the presence of E. coli., a bacteria that can cause serious food poisoning in humans.
State and federal regulations require that customers be notified if public drinking water is determined to be unsafe at any time.
DEQ is responsible for regulating more than 1,600 public water supplies in Oklahoma. All public water supplies are required to regularly submit samples to DEQ for routine testing to ensure that water is safe for human consumption.
