On the next edition of All This Jazz, on Saturday the 13th, our second-hour theme will be "Monk's Tunes." Thelonious Monk would have turned 95 earlier this week; he was born on October 10th, 1917. (He died in 1982.)
The legendary pianist and composer --- "the genius of modern music," as he was tagged way back in the day (or, if you prefer, "the high priest of bebop") --- contributed a great many songs to the current jazz repertoire: "Round Midnight," "In Walked Bud," "Ruby, My Dear," "Well, You Needn't," "I Mean You," "Misterioso," "Reflections," "Think of One," "Ask Me Now," "Crepuscule with Nellie," "Ugly Beauty," "Brilliant Corners," "Trinkle, Tinkle," "Let's Call This," "Bye-Ya," "Straight, No Chaser," "Nutty," "Work," et al. (There are lots of others....)
We'll hear several of these terrific tunes, and some others written by Thelonious Sphere Monk, on our next ATJ.
Join us from 10pm till midnight on Public Radio Tulsa KWGS 89.5-1.
