Fort Smith, AR – Ark. official criticizes EPA over river plan

FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) The city administrator of Siloam Springs is criticizing the Environmental Protection Agency for developing an Illinois River watershed protection plan.

The EPA has told Arkansas and Oklahoma officials a private company will guide the agency in figuring out how much phosphorous can be handled by the river, Lake Tenkiller in Oklahoma and key tributaries.

Administrator David Cameron of Siloam Springs says the EPA should've waited on improvements to city sewer plants and the poultry industry's efforts to remove poultry litter from the watershed.

Phosphorus can harm water quality and is found in cattle and chicken manure, commercial fertilizer and sewer plant discharges. It's also the subject of a lawsuit by Oklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson against Arkansas poultry companies.
