Apple Pie and Motherhood not discussed

Oklahoma City, OK – Askins, Fallin don't talk motherhood at forum

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) The two women running to be Oklahoma's first female governor stayed away from the issue of whether motherhood makes one candidate better than the other.

Republican nominee Mary Fallin said during a debate last week that her motherhood was an important distinction between the candidates. In an Associated Press story Saturday about motherhood emerging as a topic in the race, some viewed Fallin's remarks as a slap at Democrat Jari Askins, who is unmarried and without children.

Askins appeared on ABC's "Good Morning America" program to discuss the alleged slight, and Fallin distributed a statement Monday saying she wasn't attacking Askins when she mentioned her family.

In their appearance before members of The State Chamber Tuesday, the candidates focused on business and economic development issues.
