Join us for the next edition of All This Jazz --- a weekly survey of modern jazz, both recent and classic --- airing every Saturday night here on Public Radio 89.5-1, from 10pm till midnight. (There's also a re-broadcast of our show on Sunday night at 7pm, on Jazz 89.5-2, which is our all-jazz HD Radio channel....)
Each week, our program has a theme in its second hour. And for the 5/18/13 installment of ATJ, with the merry month of May now in full gear, we'll present a decidedly "floral" theme. Thus we'll hear lovely, catchy, ever-so-fragrant versions of such flower-powered jazz tunes as "Little Sunflower" (by Freddie Hubbard), "The Single Petal of a Rose" (by Duke Ellington; shown here), "A Flower Is a Lovesome Thing" (by Billy Strayhorn; also shown here), "Wild Flower" (by Wayne Shorter), and more.
Plus we'll hear a couple of great Woody Herman sides --- one, from the 1970s, in the first hour of our show; the other, from the 1960s, in the second hour --- as the late clarinetist, band leader, saxophonist, and singer would have turned 100 on May 16th. (Herman died in 1987; his legendary career in American music spanned six decades. And speaking of flowers, jazz critic Kevin Whitehead offered a terrific appreciation of Herman on NPR's Fresh Air the other day; in this piece, Whitehead calls Herman "The Early Bloomer Who Kept Blooming.")
It's All This Jazz, and it's all a'bloom --- right here, on Saturday night, come 10pm. Hope you can tune in.
