Tulsa, OK – Algae warning lifted for Okla.'s Tenkiller Lake

TULSA, Okla. (AP) The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has lifted all of its blue-green algae warnings and advisories at Tenkiller Lake in eastern Oklahoma.

The Corps' Tulsa office said water samples collected from the lake Oct. 25 show algae levels have dropped below the advisory level at the lake.

Warnings prohibiting contact with water remain in effect for portions of Waurika Lake, Lake Texoma and Lake Eufaula.

The algae are bacteria that produce toxins harmful to humans and livestock. It flourishes in warm, stagnant, sunlit water. This summer's heat wave combined with drought conditions to create ideal conditions for its growth.

Cooler temperatures and increased rainfall are expected to ease the algae threat.
