Audit Complete on OKC Bombing Survivor Fund

Credit OKC Bombing Memorial

The finding of an audit of the Oklahoma City bombing Disaster Relief Fund for survivors is that “the overwhelming majority of survivor requests were funded in some way.”

The audit was conducted by BDK, LLP.

Holly Sweet with survivor advocacy group the Survivor Tree Committee says a “majority” is not enough.

“If we were only talking one person who was mistreated,” she said, “that would be the world, even if it was only one.”

The audit states that some survivors fell “between the cracks.”

Jenks Residents Get Easier Recycling

Credit KWGS News Photo

Curbside recycling is coming to Jenks. The City of Jenks’s Jennifer Harper says it won’t require an extra cart.

“You can put your trash and your recyclables and your trash in the same cart,” she said. “You can have your recyclables loose and then the others would be bagged.”

Jenks residents will be able to use the same trash cart they currently have.

“It’s actually a large cart, so it handles quite a bit of trash,” Harper said.

She says American Waste Control has the technology to separate the recyclables from the bags at its facility.

Port Traffic Dips

Credit KWGS News

Traffic at the Port of Catoosa is down in February compared with the same month last year.

It’s nothing to be worried about, says the Port’s David Yarbrough.

“Our shipping totals are seasonal,” he said, “so we very often see fluctuations this time of year, but overall shipping totals are still up over average.”

He says shipments of fertilizer, as farmers prepare for the growing season, and crude oil traffic, are keeping the Port busy.

Alternative to Dams Could Be Next for Arkansas River

Credit KWGS File Photo

A major expansion planned for the River Sprit Casino at 81st and Riverside puts renewed focus on river development.

Vision 2 and its promised Arkansas River low-water dams are long gone, but Mayor Bartlett says some alternative plans are in the works.

One of them is for “lowering the level of the sand in the river, which will provide, essentially, a large lake.”

“We’ll have water in the river,” Bartlett said.

“That will show everybody what it looks like,” he said, “and then I believe that once that is realized, then a dam will be forthcoming.”

A bill that would make it easier for restaurants to donate leftover food to charity is making its way through the Oklahoma State Senate. It passed the House last week.

It’s know as the Josephine Meade Anti-Hunger Act, and it would bring state law into alignment with the federal laws protecting restaurants from liabilities associated with donating the leftover, prepared food that isn’t served to customers.

Casino Expansion Could Mean More River Improvements

Credit KWGS News

The Arkansas River may not look like a tropical paradise right now, but the Muscogee (Creek) Nation plans to change that, at least at its 81st Street River Spirit Casino.

It’s planning on adding a new 22-story hotel and a Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville Casino and Restaurant.

Muscogee (Creek) Principal Chief George Tiger says tribal investment in Arkansas River infrastructure is a definite possibility.

“We’re looking at alternatives, options, if you will,” he said, “about how we can put water on the river.”

The jury returned a recommendation of 25 years in prison after three hours of deliberation.

The other possible penalty was a charge of first-degree manslaughter.
