Oklahoma City, OK – Student poverty increases in Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) A new report from the state Department of Education says the growth rate in student poverty is more than double what it has been in previous years.

The findings are in the agency's 2009-2010 Low Income Report released Monday. State Schools Superintendent Sandy Garrett says officials had expected an increase in student poverty due to the slumping economy.

Update on Missing Girl

Tulsa, OK – GERONIMO, Okla. (AP) A mobile command center used to support the search for a missing 7-year-old girl is being shut down by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. The OSBI says the search for Aja Johnson and her suspected kidnapper Lester Hobbs goes on but the center in Geronimo is closing today.

Jones, OK – Fault lines found under Jones, site of earthquakes

JONES, Okla. (AP) New detectors have found fault lines in the Jones area where dozens of small earthquakes have been recorded since last year.

Six quake detectors known as NetQuakes accelerometers are on loan from the U.S. Geological Survey. They were set up this year to help scientists find answers to earthquake activity in the region.

Cuts at ORU

Tulsa, OK – Oral Roberts University is trimming its staff. The latest round of cuts at the university were announced today and will impact about 50 employees.

In a news release University President Mark Rutland called the cuts " necessary to continue this road to economic vitality." No faculty positions will be lost.

A news release from the University referred to the cuts as "rightsizing". The employees will be given 60-days severance.

Last fall ORU laid-off over 120-workers.

Oklahoma City, OK – State gets much-needed boost from oil, gas taxes

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) While the state is still facing a massive budget shortfall, higher oil and natural gas prices are providing a much-needed boost to state revenue collections.

State Treasurer Scott Meacham said Monday the state will have about $60 million more to spend in the current budget year and an additional $120 million available in fiscal year 2011.

Email Car Tag Notices

Bill would end mailing of car tag renewal notices

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) The Oklahoma Tax Commission would be allowed to stop mailing car tag renewal notices under a bill pending in the state Senate.

The bill would let the commission send notices by e-mail. But some opponents say many people especially those in rural Oklahoma may not have access to e-mail.

Tax Commission spokeswoman Paula Ross says mailing the notices cost more than a million dollars a year.
