Oklahoma City, OK – Governor signs budget bills


OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Gov. Brad Henry has signed legislation to fill holes in the 2010 fiscal year budget that were caused by a slow economy and sagging energy prices.

Henry signed the legislation on Friday, two days after Republicans and Democrats in the Senate reached an agreement on the appropriations and funding transfers needed to address the revenue crunch.

Federal Aid for Ice Storm

Oklahoma City, OK – White House approves aid request for ice storm


OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) The White House has approved Gov. Brad Henry's request for a major disaster declaration for the Jan. 28 ice storm.

Under the declaration issued Friday, 25 counties will receive public assistance for expenses related to response to and recovery from the winter storm that left 179,000 homes and businesses, mainly in southern Oklahoma, without power at one point.

Fatal Fire at Muskogee

Muskogee, OK – Fatal fire not considered to be suspicious

MUSKOGEE, Okla. (AP) Fire officials say a blaze that claimed the life of a 67-year-old Muskogee woman doesn't appear to be suspicious.

Assistant Fire Marshal James Ledbetter says the cause of the Wednesday night fire most likely will wind up being undetermined.

Muskogee Police Lt. Bobby Lee said investigators didn't find anything suspicious about the fire, but did see several oxygen bottles in Carol West's home.

Family: Soldier who died joined Army was patriotic

SPIRO, Okla. (AP) The family of a soldier with Oklahoma ties who died in Afghanistan says he joined the Army out of a sense of patriotism.

The U.S. Department of Defense reported earlier this week that Sgt. Vincent Owens died at Forward Operating Base Sharana, Afghanistan, after his transport vehicle was attacked.

Tulsa, OK – Oklahoma gets $4 million in federal funds

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood says Oklahoma is getting about $4 million in federal economic stimulus money to pay for transit projects.

LaHood made the announcement Friday on the deadline for the Federal Transit Administration to award all of the stimulus money alloted for transit projects.

Tulsa, OK – OSU-Tulsa president now to oversee OSU hospital

TULSA, Okla. (AP) Oklahoma State University is consolidating the leadership of its Tulsa campus and its Center for Health Sciences in the state's second-largest city.

The OSU-A&M Board of Regents on Thursday gave OSU-Tulsa President Howard Barnett the added responsibility as the president for the Center for Health Sciences.

Twister Bill Passes House

Tulsa, OK – House passes tornado safety bill

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) The Oklahoma House has passed legislation to protect tenants of mobile home and RV parks from tornados and other natural disasters.

A bill passed Thursday requires the owner of a mobile home or RV park to provide tenants with an evacuation plan in case of a tornado, high winds or flooding. The plan must be developed with the help of emergency planners in the city or county where the park is located.

Over night Fire leaves Tulsans Homeless

Tulsa, OK – A three alarm fire overnight destroys a section of the London Square Apartments at 59th and South Lewis. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

One woman was taken to the hospital and another was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. The blaze broke out about 2 a.m. Friday morning.

30-to-40 people were displaced by the fire. The Red Cross will put them up in hotels until the housing can be founding. 12-apartments sustained damage.
