Remembering: Hannah Atkins

Oklahoma City, OK – Atkins' body lies in state at Capitol

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) The body of Hannah Atkins, the first black woman elected to the Oklahoma House, has been brought to the state Capitol to lie in state.

Atkins died June 17 at the age of 86. Her closed casket was placed in the Capitol's second-floor rotunda Thursday.

Impound!

Oklahoma City, OK – Got Car Insurance? If you don't your car could soon be impounded. Governor Henry has signed legislation allowing law enforcement to impound cars without insurance. The bill is from Bartlesville lawmaker Steve Martin.

Martin says an estimated 28-percent of cars on Oklahoma roads are without insurance. The law goes into effect November first.

Owasso Soldier Killed in Afghanistan

US Army/Fort Campbell, KY

Fort Campbell, KY – Spc. Andrew R. Looney, 22, of Owasso, Okla. died June 21 when an insurgent detonated a suicide vest next to a traffic control point outside of Lar Sholtan Village, Afghanistan.

Looney was an infantrymen assigned to Company C., 2nd Battalion 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team. He joined the Army July 2007, and arrived at Fort Campbell in February 2009.

Mayor Vetoes Portions of Budget

Tulsa, OK – Mayor Dewey Bartlett issued a veto on specific items of the recently passed budget ordinance for the City of Tulsa for FY 2011, as well a veto of the decision by the Council to transfer $746,500 to the General Fund from the Tulsa Authority for the Recovery of Energy fund. The TARE money was meant to fund $630,000 for city-wide mowing, and $116,500 for graffiti abatement.

Gas Price Spike in Tulsa

Tulsa, OK –
Gasoline prices take a jump in Tulsa. The average is up to $2.59 a gallon. That is up from $2.45. The need for less polluting summer blends coupled with supply and demand issues is catching the blame.

The Tulsa price is still well below the national average.

Tulsa, Ok – Mayor Bartlett Announces June 23 as Olympic Day


Mayor Dewey Bartlett announced today that June 23 is the worldwide commemoration Olympic Day of Baron Pierre de Coubertin's June 23, 1894, convening of the first International Olympic Committee (IOC) meeting at the Sorbonne in Paris, and the founding of the Modern Olympic Games. National Olympic Committees (NOCs) throughout the world will also participate in the international celebration, with each Olympic Committee sending Olympic Day greetings to participating nations.
