Superintendent of the Year

Oklahoma City, OK – The superintendent of the Newcastle Public School District has been named the 2011 Oklahoma Superintendent of the Year.

The Oklahoma Association of School Administrators says Robert Everett was chosen from superintendent finalists from across the state, and will be recognized at the Annual Summer Conference set for June 8-10. It's hosted by the Cooperative Council for Oklahoma School Administration.

Midwest Severe- Governor

Oklahoma City, OK – Gov. Mary Fallin has declared a state of emergency for 68 Oklahoma counties after tornadoes raked across the state, destroying homes and businesses and killing eight people.

The governor issued the declaration Wednesday and it includes most of the state, which was battered with tornadoes, straight-line winds, damaging hail and flooding.

The executive order authorizes state agencies to make emergency purchases. It also activates a state law prohibiting price gouging goes into effect.

Oklahoma Storms

Norman, OK – Employees at the National Weather Service and Storm Prediction Center found themselves heeding their own advice when they took cover as tornadoes barreled through Oklahoma.

Storm Prediction Center spokeswoman Keli Tarp says the employees in the building were told to go to a shelter as a tornado passed by in south Norman. There have been no reports of damage or injuries at the center.

BIA Decision

Oklahoma City – The federal Bureau of Indian Affairs says the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians can place 76 acres of land south of Tahlequah into trust status.

The Tahlequah-based tribe received a letter Tuesday from the BIA regional office in Muskogee stating the agency's approval of the UKB's application.

Oklahoma City – Gov. Mary Fallin has signed eight bills that she says help fulfill her campaign promise to make Oklahoma a more business friendly state and reduce the size and cost of state government.

Fallin signed the bills Tuesday with GOP legislative leaders watching. They're intended to overhaul the state's workers' compensation laws, consolidate state agencies and information technology services, and create a fund the governor can access to help lure businesses to the state.
