Miami, OK – Oklahoma Highway Patrol to remove SUV from river

MIAMI, Okla. (AP) The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says it will begin removing a sport utility vehicle from the icy waters of the Spring River.

The SUV slid off the Will Rogers Turnpike early Thursday, resulting in three deaths and five injuries.

Troopers would like to begin removing the vehicle on Saturday or Sunday, weather and road conditions permitting.

Oklahoma City, OK – Gov. Mary Fallin delivers State of State address

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Gov. Mary Fallin says Oklahoma needs to improve its schools to better educate children.

Fallin made the remarks during her State of the State address Monday.

Fallin says lawmakers should restructure spending and educational programs in order to get more money into the classroom. She says that will require cutting down on overhead and educational bureaucracy by sharing administrative resources.

Details on Tulsa Recovery

Tulsa, OK – Public Works is still working around the clock with spreaders assigned to 35 specific routes totaling 1,750 lane-miles. Spreading and plowing routes are prioritized based on traffic counts. There are 118 secondary arterials. These streets are in neighborhoods and run the length of a square mile, between arterial roadways. Crews divided the city into west, central and east sections, and began clearing in the most populated areas within each section first.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) A state Senate committee has approved a bill to strip power from the Oklahoma State Board of Education and give the state school superintendent complete control of the agency.

In a straight-party vote, the Senate Education Committee voted 12-5 on Monday in favor of the bill by Republican Sen. John Ford.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Oklahoma Labor Commissioner Mark Costello is asking lawmakers to overhaul the state's workers' compensation system.

Costello appeared Monday before the Oklahoma House's Committee on Insurance. He's proposing repeal of the state's existing Workers Compensation Court system and replacing it with an administrative system.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) The Oklahoma Legislature is set to convene.

The Legislature will convene formally at noon Monday and Gov. Mary Fallin will deliver her first State of the State address at about 12:30 p.m. Fallin is the state's first Republican governor in eight years.

In her speech, Fallin is expected to outline her priorities and present her balanced budget proposal to the Legislature.
